Another 2006 Mac Pro 8-Core (Dual x5365) CPU Upgrade + Mac Pro 2,1 EFI Update:
(From a reader mail.)
"Mac Pro 1,1 Upgrade to x5365 clovertowns
Just adding to the list for Mac Pro 1,1 upgrades. Just upgraded my 3.0 Ghz dual core 5160's in my Mac Pro 1, 1 to a brand new pair of 3.0GHz SLAED x5365 quad cores. (Ref: Intel X5365 CPU info.) Everything is working great. Stressed them last night with handbrake rendering 1080p video maxing out all 8 cores, got them up to about 170°F or about 75°C. They had no issues at that temp and I really dont worry about that because the 5300 series are thermally managed. The speed boost is significant and is double the rendering speed in Handbrake from the previous 5160's.
Overall I would rate this a 10 out of 10 so far. I also used the utility from netkas to flash the firmware to a Mac Pro 2,1 (from 1,1) and the processors are both recognized properly.
(Ref: Sept 2011 archives page here of (Unofficial) Mac Pro 1,1 to 2,1 EFI Updater Reports)
I'm running the Developer Beta of OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). All is well and no crashes at all.
Overall I'm very pleased with the upgrade and looking forward to really stressing them out rendering video which is most of what I do with my Mac Pro.

Late-2012 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro EFI Update v1.1:
(download page linked. My comments are in italics.)
"About MacBook Pro Retina EFI Update v1.1 (4.76 MB)
This update is recommended for all 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display (late 2012) models. This update improves sleep performance, enhances Thunderbolt router support, fixes an HDMI display issue, and improves compatibility when using the 5GHz band in Wi-Fi.
Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: After Update is complete:
Build version: 0106.03 (looks like same info as MM EFI Update)
ROM version: MBP102.88Z.0106.B03.1211161133
(I suspect numbers after "BO3" should be removed from doc. Ditto for "build version" note.
Update: Per revised EFI updates doc Version is "MBP102.0106.B03")
Mac OS X 10.8.1 and greater, EFI version 0106.01"
Based on past history (repeatedly), the previous EFI version listed may be incorrect/missing a letter - i.e. .B01 vs .01. (And I suspect this update and the iMac update (below) are similar code changes as the recent Late 2012 Mac Mini EFI Update 1.7. Although that update only listed an HDMI flicker fix, I wondered if there was more included.)
Late-2012 iMac EFI Update 2.0:
(download page linked. Notes in italics are mine.)
"About iMac EFI Update 2.0 (4.32 MB)
This update is recommended for all iMac (late 2012) models. This update contains general performance fixes pertaining to sleep and Thunderbolt, and improves compatibility when using the 5GHz band in Wi-Fi.
Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: After Update is complete:
Build version: 010A.05
ROM version: IM131.88Z.010A.B05.1211151146
(I suspect numbers after "BO5" should be removed from doc. Ditto for "build version" note.
Update: Per revised EFI updates doc Version is "IM131.010A.B05")
Mac OS X 10.8.1 and greater, EFI version 010A"
WiFi Update 1.0 for Late-2012 Macs running 10.8.2 Build 12C2034:
(download page linked. Includes my notes in italics)
"About Mac Wi-Fi Update 1.0 (1.49 MB)
This update is recommended for all late 2012 Mac systems. This update improves compatibility when using the 5GHz band in Wi-Fi.
To confirm the update has been applied, the CFBundleVersion string of the AirPortBrcm4311.kext will need to be checked.
New driver delivered in update:
AirPortBrcm4331.kext CFBundleVersion = 612.20.15
(Broadcom WiFi driver. This update is included in OS X 10.8.2 build 12C3104.-Mike
System Profiler can be used to check the kext version (under System Report, Software, Extensions) but note the first 'Version' listed of updated driver is "6.1.2" - farther down is "Kext Version" that shows "612.20.15".-Mike)
System Requirements: OS X 10.8.2 (specifically build version 12C2034)"
As I mentioned above - if you are running OS X 10.8.2 build 12C3104 you already have this update.
FYI if you're not a regular reader here - the Nov 29th re-release of the 10.8.2 Update for Late-2012 Macs was build 12C3104. The original release (posted Oct. 24th, later pulled) of that update was build 12C2034. (As I mentioned in Nov. 29th news on re-release - I reapplied that later build 10.8.2 updater (D/L) over the previous 10.8.2 build 12C2034.)
SoftRAID 4.5 Update has fix for Data Corruption with Late 2012 Mac Mini:
Just a heads-up for any users with a Late-2012 Mac Mini. As of Monday AM (Dec 17th), although not listed at the main website - the Latest SoftRAID release download is version 4.5. (later in the day updated to v4.5.1 - see reason below) Here's the info from the included release notes PDF for v4.5:
SoftRAID 4.5 Release Notes
Friday, December 14, 2012
SoftRAID version 4.5 fixes a data corruption bug which affects SoftRAID stripe and mirror volumes which are connected to the latest Mac minis (Late 2012). Users with these new Mac minis should upgrade to version 4.5 before connecting any SoftRAID volumes to their Mac. We strongly encourage all SoftRAID users to upgrade to this version to prevent any possible problems with Macs that will be released in the future.
This version of SoftRAID requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later to run. It will not run on
earlier versions of Mac OS X.
Fixed a bug in the SoftRAID driver which caused data corruption when writing to stripe
and mirror volumes. This bug only occurred on the new Mac mini (Late 2012).
Bug Fixes in SoftRAID 4.5:
Fixed a bug in the SoftRAID application which allowed some menu items in the "Disk"
menu to remain enabled when a volume tile was selected.
Update: later in the day the SoftRaid website was updated to list v4.5, and then released v4.5.1 which fixed a bug in v4.5:
"Bug Fixes in SoftRAID 4.5.1
The driver in SoftRAID 4.5 failed to load on Macs which use the 32-bit kernel when running Mac OS X 10.7. These are the same Macs which cannot run Mac OS X 10.8 and include the 2007 Mac Pro and early 2007 MacBook Pros. The error which resulted in the driver failing to load was caused by a bug in the release version of Xcode 4.5.2, Apple's developer environment. The SoftRAID driver version 4.5.1 is built with a different version of Xcode which correctly builds drivers for 32-bit kernels"
BTW: Although the 2006/2007 Mac Pros are EFI32 and not officially supported with Mountain Lion, there have been workarounds to run 10.8 on them. Here's an example (from the August 1st, 2012 news page) - 2006 Mac Pro (1,1) owner report on Mountain Lion Install. (I included links to previous how-to articles/threads there also in case anyone missed them earlier.)
Mirrors for (1st Gen) ATV Cloner (added to Apple TV Hard Drive Upgrade page)
(From a recent reader mail. Not used these mirrored files personally)
"Hi Mike, Just wanted to let you know that I have used you walk through several times for upgrading (1st gen) Apple TV hard drive and wanted to say thank you for it. I notice that you note the link to download ATVCloner is dead. I have included links to both versions of the files if you would like to add them your page.
Here is the link to the page that I got them from. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1431132
It seems as though DynaTech is trying to get the page back up, but I only get an empty page when I try.
Thanks again for your guide.
Thanks James. Added the above to my article. (I've also had some requests for HD images of the 1st Gen AppleTV from failed drive owners but can't help with that, sorry.)
